Jack Layton and Harbour Square Park Ferry Terminal Competition

Toronto

In 2014 Waterfront Toronto sponsored an international competition for the redesign of the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal, portal to Toronto Islands and the adjacent Harbour Square Park, the centrepiece of the city’s central waterfront. What is emerging all along the Toronto waterfront is one of the most remarkable transformations of its kind in North America and beyond. The reimagining of the Ferry Terminal and Harbour Square represents a key milestone in this process. This competition is about re-validating and re-appropriating a strategically located but undervalued resource, giving it new meaning and changing public consciousness and perceptions. In April 2015 Waterfront Toronto, in partnership with the City of Toronto announced that KPMB Architects + West 8 + Greenberg Consultants was the winning team with their` Harbour Landing`. This winning design will be used to create a unifying and inspiring Master Plan for the revitalization of the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal and Harbour Square Park that can be phased in over time, as funding and budget become available. The vision for the area will result in a welcoming gateway to the Toronto Islands – one of the City’s most unique and cherished parks – with amenities and infrastructure to support the approximately 1.3 million visitors who use the ferry each year.
