Dorothea Dix Park Master Plan
Raleigh NC
The City of Raleigh is undertaking the development of a master plan for Dorothea Dix Park, one of the most historically significant new park projects in America. Ken Greenberg is part of a team led by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates selected to prepare this plan. From a plantation to a mental health hospital to the headquarters of a state agency, this 398 acre property which blends historic architecture and rich landscapes has evolved through centuries into a unique destination in the heart of North Carolina’s Capital City. This site marks the spot where a common purpose was shared— the treatment and healing of North Carolina’s mentally ill. This rich history and legacy of the land will contribute to the creation of an authentic vision for its future. It is a truly special place offering skyline views, old growth oaks and rolling fields all in a bucolic, campus-like setting. It has the potential to capture the imagination providing an unprecedented opportunity to create one of America’s next great public spaces.
