University Cultural Center Area (UCCA)

Detroit

Ken Greenberg was retained to lead a team with the Smith Group/JJR to prepare a concept for a Midtown Greenway Loop for the University Cultural Corridor Area supported by the Southeast Michigan Community Foundation. The Greenway is intended to re-enforce a cluster of important pedestrian destinations, provide a healthy environment, and promote walking, jogging, and cycling. It will address a combination of daily routines and single destination trips for multiple constituencies including residents, visitors and convention goers students, staff, faculty, kids and school groups, seniors, employees and clients of local businesses and major Institutions -including Wayne State University, the Detroit Institute of Art, the Detroit Medical Center, the Public Library, the Science Center, and the Museum of African American History. The Greenway is designed to extend stays, promote synergies, and link key destinations, accelerating the process of renewal in the area which is significant but slow-paced. A viable first phase loop of approximately 1.7 miles in length will be linked to greenway initiatives in surrounding areas, providing a key component of a larger greenway network linking New Center to Downtown and the River. The greenway trail will have a distinctive contemporary design quality stressing arts and culture. Its design will employ a special walking surface, lighting, graphics and landscaping to clearly orient the user and visitor and will be sensitive to a variety of environments including historic districts, campuses, and commercial and residential settings.
