Greater Downtown Partnership

Detroit

The Greater Downtown Partnership was formed in 1996 to accelerate physical revitalization and economic development in Greater Downtown Detroit. Ken Greenberg, then a partner in Berridge Lewinberg Greenberg Dark Gabor, was retained to lead a multi-disciplinary team in preparing comprehensive Reinvestment Strategy for the Greater Downtown. The Strategy built on the commitment of key institutions and actors and the great inherent strengths in the 1805 Plan by Judge Augustus Woodward which created a radial focus at the heart of downtown called Campus Martius whose full potential had never been realized. Radiating from this heart a series of linked "urban villages" occupying a combination of remarkable historic structures and new building were proposed in the "Necklace District" around Grand Circus Park are connected by improved streetscapes and strategic insertions of new uses.
